Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis - Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is often referred to as MS and it’s a very serious disease. If you have a family member with this condition, then you know how difficult and painful it can be. This medical condition causes the immune system to eat away the covering that protects the nerves in the body. This makes it difficult for the brain to communicate with the rest of the body and eventually the nerves can completely deteriorate.

Multiple sclerosis is classified as an autoimmune disease because the immune system destroys myelin, which is the fatty substance protecting the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. It’s not known what causes a person to have Multiple sclerosis but genetics and infections that a person has as a child could be contributing factors.

Women are more susceptible to multiple sclerosis than men and it usually occurs between the ages of twenty and forty although, anyone at any age can get Multiple sclerosis. It’s a hard disease to diagnosis because the symptoms can be intermittent. It also affects different nerves making it more difficult to trace the source of the pain.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and frequently disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the condition affects about 400,000 Americans and is the most frequent cause of neurological disability other than trauma in people from ages 20 to 50. Symptoms vary among patients and can range from mild to severe and may cause numbness of the limbs, paralysis and even loss of vision. The progression and severity of the disease are unpredictable. Symptoms of Multiple sclerosis include but are not limited to the following:

  • Fatigue
  • Lack of coordination
  • Double vision or pain in the eye
  • Blurred or loss of vision in one eye
  • Numbness in limbs
  • Dizziness
  • Tremors
  • Tingling pain in different parts of body
  • Electric-shock sensation with head movements

Multiple Sclerosis Diagnosis

Multiple sclerosis can not be cured but there are medications that can help to reduce the symptoms. Therapy is usually given to help a person learn how to perform strength exercises and to correctly stretch the muscles.

Since it’s not known what causes multiple sclerosis, there is no way to prevent this disease. If you have signs and symptoms of Multiple sclerosis, it’s suggested you see your doctor for an examination. It’s vital that you give them complete details of the problems you are having in order for them to determine what may be causing your symptoms.
